What is share-of-voice in AI search?

By Moshe Dor, FounderLast updated

AI share-of-voice (SoV) is the percentage of AI-generated answers that cite your firm across a fixed panel of realistic client queries. Run 25 prompts across four engines: if your firm appears in 12 of 100 engine-answers and a competitor in 30, your SoV is 12% against their 30%. It is the core KPI of AI visibility.

How is AI share-of-voice computed?

Fix a prompt panel (realistic money queries for your practice area and metro), run each prompt on each engine on a schedule, parse every firm named in every answer, and divide your citations by total answers. Consistency matters more than scale — the same panel, monthly, produces a trend you can act on.

Why is SoV better than rankings for AI channels?

Because there are no rankings inside a generated answer — inclusion is the game. An answer names one to three firms; everyone else is invisible. SoV captures that binary reality across many queries, engine by engine, and shows exactly which competitor owns which query surface.

What SoV movement is realistic?

From near zero, well-executed AEO typically produces first citations on long-tail queries within one to two months and meaningful SoV on competitive queries within three to six. Expect volatility: model updates reshuffle answers. That is why the honest metric is a monthly trend line, never a one-day snapshot.
